Writing Essential Skills for Level 12
Senior English: (using 10th Grade Reading Standards)
Students will:
- Apply literary terminology and knowledge of literary techniques to understand text. Reading Standard 6a
- Identify author’s viewpoint, purpose and historical/cultural context from information presented in the text. Reading Standard 4a
Mass Media: (10th Grade Reading Standards)
Students will:
- Gain a basic understanding of the technical aspects of radio, TV, newspaper, magazine and film.
- Learn how to use these media types for his/her own benefit.
- Become more aware of the physical and mental effects of media.
- Study and understand his/her role in the media process.
- Be aware of persuasive techniques in advertising.
- Read to locate, select and make use of relevant information from a variety of media, reference and technological sources. Reading Standard 5
- Evaluate information for specific needs, validity, credibility and bias. Reading Standard 5d
- Analyze a variety of text (editorials, political cartoons, advertisements, essays) in order to make predictions and draw conclusions. Reading Standard 4d
- Differentiate fact from opinion in a variety of text. Reading Standard 4f
ENG 121& ENG 122: (10th grade reading and writing standards)
Students will:
- Plan, write and revise multiple-paragraph compositions that function as integrated wholes. writing 2b
- Demonstrate competence in the following areas:
- Generating and exploring ideas.
- Writing for a variety of purposes and audiences.
- Focusing and developing a thesis.
- Exploring a variety of appropriate organizational strategies.
- Critical/logical thinking skills such as analysis, evaluation, synthesis and criticism.
- Use organizational features of printed text including prefaces, appendices, annotations, citations, and bibliographical references to locate relevant information. Reading Standard 5a
- Use accurate grammar, mechanics and spelling and will choose diction and usage appropriate to their writing purposes and audiences.
