Content and Essential Skills
- Determine skill level of students by assessment using spelling grammar, and punctuation
- Free write for a few days to determine strengths and weaknesses, and writing style.
- Emphasize the importance of pre-writing, editing, proof-reading and publishing quality work.
- Review the elements of 6-trait writing.

Content and Essential Skills
- What are the main parts of speech? (review)
- Which parts of speech are students have the most trouble identifying?
- Review parts of speech and recognize them in writing.
- What is a compound sentence and its parts?
- What are the four types of sentences?
- What is a run-on sentence? What is a fragment?
- Why is it important to know how to spell commonly used words? Why is proper punctuation needed?
- What are Occasion /Position statements? Power statements?
- Transitional Expressions?
- How do you write a strong conclusion?
- What phrases should be avoided in writing positions statements, conclusions?
Skills
- Students will identify all 8 parts of speech, recognize where they are used in a sentence, and be able to use them properly.
- Students will be able to write short paragraphs, use four different types of sentences, and identify the subject in each sentence type.
- Identify subject in inverted sentences and in sentences beginning with here or there.
- Recognize sentence fragments and run-on sentences and correct them in writing.
- Students will be responsible for a set list of predetermined spelling words.
- Students will know the essential rules of punctuation, including titles, dialogue, and prose.
- Students will refine skills to write a 5 paragraph essay in which they demonstrate a strong thesis, supporting paragraphs, and a solid conclusion. Transitions should be smooth, and make sense. They will understand how to follow a formula and eventually learn to expand that formula.
- Show logical thinking skills, realistic expectations, and strong organizational pattern.

Write a 5-paragraph essay on an autobiographical incident Graded on 100 points Graded on 6-trait aspects
Determine the needs of students, and assign chapters as needed, followed by formal assessment on specific skills

- What is a time line?
- What is an effective way for students to write an autobiographical piece?
- What setting and experience does the student recall in the flashback?

- What observation can you make about life, based on your experience?

-Students will construct a timeline of their lives, using creative approaches, in order to gather material for a reflective essay.
-Students will write in the first person. Students will use a flahback moment, unexpected statement, or thematic setting to begin the essay.
-Students will use proper transitioning methods to move the story along; use specific details to re-create the experience for readers.
-Student knows the significance of the event, how readers should apply the experience, or make an observation based on the experience
-Active/Passive Voice
-Students will refine skills as needed. Teacher will determine where the majority of weakness are, and use materials available to enhance skill level

- Students will: analyze the similarities and differences between two characters in the novel and the play
