Writing Essential Skills for Level 9
Freshman Literature: (revised 5/06)
Students will:
- Determine meanings of words by using context clues Reading Standard 1g
- Analyze a variety of text to predict, conclude, and infer Reading Standard 4d
- Summarize information from given texts Reading Standard 5c
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of literary elements (plot, setting, character, irony, point of view, theme) and literary techniques (suspense, foreshadowing, characterization, figurative language) Reading Standard 6b
Freshman Writing:
Students will:
- Write in a variety of genre such as personal narrative, essay, and letter for specific purposes Reading Standard 2a
- Use standard English in writing, including pronoun/antecedent agreement, subject/verb agreement, regular/irregular verbs and correct modifiers Reading Standard 3b
- Define and recognize the 8 parts of speech
- Write in complete sentences, using conventions such as capitalization, commas, quotations marks, etc. Correctly Reading Standard 3c and d
- Use paragraphing correctly so that each paragraph focuses on one major idea which is supported by reasons, facts, details, explanation, evidence, etc. Reading Standard 3f
Basic Freshman English:
This class is designed for students who failed either Freshman Writing or Freshman Literature. Therefore, any or all of the essential skills for Freshman Writing or Freshman Literature may be chosen for use in this class, depending on the needs of the students.
