Writing Standard 2.c - Level 7

Organize ideas so that there is an inviting introduction, logical arrangement of ideas, and a satisfying conclusion.

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

Students will write introductions and topic sentences, put supporting details in order, and end with a concluding sentence.

Standard Unwrapped

  • KNOW that a quality paragraph must have a topic sentence, two or three main ideas, two or three specific supporting details for each main idea, and a concluding sentence that restates the topic sentence using different wording.
  • KNOW that quality writing needs a "hook" to get the readers' attention.
  • KNOW that ideas must be in a logical order.
  • KNOW that good writers bring their writing to a satisfying conclusion.

ABLE TO DO

  1. Student will be able to write a solid topic sentence.
  2. Student will be able to write a quality 8- to 11-sentence paragraph.
  3. Student will be able to write a strong concluding sentence.

Instructional Strategies

  1. Introduce and practice 11-sentence paragraph format
    • Topic sentence
    • Three primary supports
    • Two secondary supports for each primary
    • Concluding sentence
  2. Introduce and practice three- to five-paragraph essay format
    • Introductory paragraph that gets the readers attention and includes a solid, arguable thesis statement
    • One to three body paragraphs
    • Solid concluding paragraph which brings the essay to a close and leaves the reader thinking
  3. Lecture/Discussion
  4. Cooperative learning activities
    • Think, pair, share
    • Group writing activities
  5. Peer editing and evaluation

Assessment Strategies

  • Informal assessment
  • Teacher-made and professional formal assessments
  • Using an appropriate rubric, examples of student writing will be evaluated.
