Students will include specific details and examples that are related to the topic
Standard Unwrapped
- KNOW how to write supporting details that are relevant to the prompt
- KNOW that they need two or three good supporting details in a paragraph
ABLE TO DO
- Student will be able to write a solid 8- to 11-sentence paragraph with main ideas and specific, elaborated details that move beyond the obvious.
- Given examples, student will be able to identify supporting details that should/should not be in a paragraph.
Instructional Strategies
- Introduce 11-sentence paragraph format
- Topic sentence
- Three primary supports
- Two secondary supports for each primary
- Concluding sentence
- Practice writing supporting details

- Give example paragraphs and have students identify the following:
- Where is the topic sentence?
- Are there at least three primary supports?
- Do all of the examples/supports relate to the topic sentence?
- Are there any sentences which should not be included in the paragraph?
- Does the concluding sentence restate the topic sentence using different words?
- Provide adequate time for students to practice writing paragraphs.
Assessment Strategies
- Give students sample paragraphs and have them identify the parts of the paragraph.
- topic sentence, primary supports, secondary supports, and concluding sentence.
- Give students a variety of prompts and have them write a paragraph and evaluate the paragraph using an appropriate rubric.
- Formal test to evaluate student's understanding of the parts of a paragraph.
- Teacher observation/evaluation of student writing.
