Writing Standard 2.a - Level 7

Write in a variety of genre such as narratives, informational brochures, essays, stories, and letters for specific purposes (for example: to entertain, to inform, or to persuade).

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

Students will write papers that entertain, inform, or persuade using different formats

Standard Unwrapped

  • KNOW what should be included in narratives, stories, descriptions, and different types of expository paragraphs and essays.
  • KNOW that their style of writing should be different depending on whether they are writing to entertain, inform, or persuade an audience.

ABLE TO DO

  1. Students should be able to write a well-crafted piece for each genre.
  2. Students should be able to use appropriate language, vocabulary, and structure in their writing.
  3. Students should be able to determine what format to use depending upon their purpose for writing.

Instructional Strategies

  1. Introduce and practice the 11-sentence paragraph format
    • Topic sentence
    • Three primary supports
    • Two secondary supports for each primary
    • Concluding sentence
  2. Introduce and practice three- to five-paragraph essay format
    • Introductory paragraph that gets the reader's attention and includes a solid, arguable thesis statement
    • One to three body paragraphs
    • Solid concluding paragraph which brings the essay to a close and leaves the reader thinking
  3. Review patterns for narratives, informational brochures, stories, expository (cause/effect, compare/contrast, classification/division), descriptive, persuasive, and poetry.
  4. Provide examples of each genre for students to evaluate
  5. Have students write examples of each genre
  6. Use a variety of teacher-generated materials and professional materials

Assessment Strategies

  • Informal assessment of writing
  • Given a choice of topics, student will write an appropriate paragraph or essay which will be evaluated with a suitable rubric.
  • Formal tests to evaluate student's understanding of the purposes of writing, the components of writing, and the genres of writing.
  • Teacher-made and professional assessment tools
