Writing Essential Skills for Level 6

First Quarter

Student will be able to:

  • Use subject/verb agreement, nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, homonyms, and homophones. Standard 3.b
  • Identify subject, verb, pronouns and adjectives. Standard 3.a
  • Use conventions correctly (for example: apostrophes in contractions and singular possessives; quotation marks; end-marks; abbreviations; and commas used with conjunctions, in a series, and introductory phrases). Standard 3.d.2


Second Quarter

Student will be able to:

  • Write in complete sentences. Standard 3.c
  • Identify and use conventional spelling. Standard 3.e
  • Meet all requirements of the prompt. Stays fully focused on topic. Includes relevant information. Provides main ideas and specific, elaborated details that move beyond the obvious (2.g). Includes an inviting introduction, logical arrangements of ideas and satisfying conclusion (2.b.2). Maintains a clear order with transitions between ideas (2.h). Standard 2CO
  • Use language skills successfully support meaning; few, if any errors in the following: Subject/verb and pronoun/antecedent agreement/modifiers (3.b). Punctuation: end punctuation, commas, apostrophes, quotation marks, semicolons (3.b.2). Abbreviation and paragraphing. Standard 3LA


Third Quarter

Student will be able to:

  • Use transitions to link ideas. Standard 2.h
  • Organize writing using a logical arrangement of ideas. Standard 2.b.2
  • Plan, draft, revise, and edit for a final copy. Standard 2.d
  • Develop ideas and content with relevant details, examples, and/or reasons. Standard 2.g


Fourth Quarter

Student will be able to:

  • Write in a variety of modes such as narrative, expository, descriptive, or persuasive for various audiences and purposes (for example: to entertain, to inform, or to persuade.) Standard 2.a
  • Use a variety of sentence structures. Standard 2.f
  • Use language, which supports and enriches the idea. Standard 2.c
