Writing Essential Skills for Level 5

First Quarter

Student will be able to:

  • Identify the characteristics of a variety of modes of writing (Narrative, Expository, Persuasive, and Descriptive). (2.a)
  • Identify the purposes and audiences of each main idea. Power Standard 2, (2.a.1)
  • Development of a clear and focused topic. (2.g)
  • Concise details to support the main idea. Power Standard 2b, 2c and 2g
  • Use capitals and end punctuation in complex and compound sentences during the editing process. (3.d.1, 3.d.2, 3.e)
  • Identify, edit, and correct the subjects and predicates in their narrative or descriptive writing. (2.d)

Second Quarter

Student will be able to:

  • Compose a five-paragraph narrative or descriptive writing piece that demonstrates an inviting opening. (2.b.2)
  • Use logical and effective sequencing with careful linking of one idea or paragraph to another. (2.h)
  • Include an effective ending. (2.b.2)
  • Apply the trait of voice to a five-paragraph narrative or descriptive writing piece using words and phrases that give a sense of the writer behind the words. (2.a.1)
  • Tone is appropriate to the purpose of the writing and the audience. (2.a)
  • The student has a sense of commitment and enthusiasm to the topic. (2.a)
  • Use correct subject verb agreement. (3.b)
  • Incorporate the correct usage of dialogue and commas. (3.d.2)


Third Quarter

Student will be able to:

  • Correct and accurate language usage. (2.c)
  • Use strong verbs. (3.b)
  • Use words that are vivid, precise, effective, and original. (2.c)
  • Demonstrates the trait of sentence fluency using a variety of logic in sentence beginnings. (2.f)
  • Demonstrates the trait of sentence fluency using differences in sentence length. (2.f)
  • Use variations in general patterning that focuses on the rhythm and cadence of the piece.
  • Identify during the editing or revision process the correct use of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, pronouns, and interjections. (2.d & 3.b)


Fourth Quarter

Student will be able to:

  • Using consistent verb tense in complex and compound sentences. (3.b)
  • Using accurate spelling. (3.e)
  • Use of correct punctuation in sentences involving dialogue. (3.d.2)
  • Capitalization of proper nouns. (3.d.1)
  • Use of commas in a series. (3.d.2)
  • Use all six traits plus presentation to produce a piece that is well organized with a clear topic, includes numerous relevant supporting details, uses striking vocabulary and varied sentence structure to produce an engaging piece of writing. (2.b, 2.g, 2.c)
