Writing Essential Skills for Level 4
First Quarter
Student will be able to:
- Plan, organize, develop ideas, and write for a variety of purposes. Writing Standard 2.a, 2.d, & 2.g
- Plan, organize, develop ideas, and write a descriptive piece containing a beginning, middle, & end. Writing Standard 2.a, 2.b, 2.d, & 2.g
- Use descriptive, content vocabulary. Writing Standard 2.c
- Vary sentence beginnings and lengths. Writing Standard 2.f
- Write complete sentences using capitalization and end punctuation correctly. Writing Standard 3.c, 3.d.1, & 3.d.2
- Correctly spell grade appropriate words. Writing Standard 3.e
Second Quarter
Student will be able to:
- Plan, organize, develop ideas, and write a personal narrative & a friendly letter containing a beginning, middle, & end. Writing Standard 2.a, 2.b, 2.d, & 2.g
- Respond to literature and for other purposes. Writing Standard 2
- Identify & use figurative language, i.e. simile and metaphor. Writing Standard 2.c
- Use standard English when writing (subject/verb agreement). Writing Standard 3.b
- Identify verbs- action, forms of "be". Writing Standard 3.a
- Identify simple & complete subject and predicate. Writing Standard 3.b
- Use transition words effectively. Writing Standard 2.h
- Use correct capitalization: beginnings of proper nouns, sentences, titles, and abbreviations. Writing Standard 3.d1
Third Quarter
Student will be able to:
- Plan, organize, develop ideas, and write a compare/contrast and an expository piece containing a beginning, middle, & end. Writing Standard 2.a, 2.b, 2.d, & 2.g
- Use of pronouns as subject, object, and possessive. Writing Standard 3.b
- Accurately write subject/verb agreement. Writing Standard 3.b
- Identify and use nouns and possessive nouns in singular and plural form. Writing Standard 3.a
- Identify & use adjectives, adverbs, comparative adjectives/adverbs, prepositions and prepositional phrases. Writing Standard 3.a
- Use a variety of sentence types including compound, simple, complex. Writing Standard 2.f
Fourth Quarter
Student will be able to:
- Plan, organize, develop ideas, and write a how to and a persuasive piece containing a beginning, middle, & end. Writing Standard 2.a, 2.b, 2.d, & 2.g
- Develop and plan ideas of multiple paragraph writing. Writing Standard 3.f
- Identify prepositions and use prepositional phrases. Writing Standard 3.a
- Use commas in friendly letters, compound sentences, appositives, and in a series. Writing Standard 3.d2
- Use quotation marks around a direct quote. Writing Standard 3.d2
