Spell high frequency words correctly (age-appropriate).
Standard in Kid Friendly Language
Students will correctly spell the words they use most often.
Standard Unwrapped
KNOW Students will recognize correct spelling patterns in daily word use.
ABLE TO DO Students will be able to correctly demonstrate the use of correct spelling in their daily work. Students will be able to achieve 100% accuracy on a 1st grade district spelling list.
Instructional Strategies
- Students will use the word wall to assist them in spelling high frequency and sight words.
- Students will be given weekly spelling lists to practice at school and at home.
- Spelling and high frequency words are imbedded in the reading series to increase frequency of occurrence in daily reading.
Assessment Strategies
- Quarterly assessments of student's ability to produce sentences that include capitalization at the beginning of each sentence.
- Review of daily writing samples to ensure the use of correct capitalization at the beginning of each sentence.
- Weekly spelling tests consisting of 10 spelling words from the reading curriculum. Teacher may add up to 5 high frequency or word wall words as well.

Projects and Activities
Spelling takes a Hit! - In this spelling game, you need a clear shower curtain liner and a fly swatter - fun game for small or large groups. Desktop spelling - Spelling game where student sit on top of their desks if they can spell correctly.
Strategies for Special Needs Students
- "Larry's Laptop"-students practice spelling words on their own laptop computer keyboard. Copy and laminate template of Larry's Laptop. Students use them to practice spelling words and get acquainted with keyboard.
- "Musical Words"-Obtain a musical keyboard. Use sticky dots that fit on the keys. Write a letter on each dot and put them on the keys in alphabetical order (may want to make vowels a different color than consonants). Student spells words on the keyboard.
