Discuss basic issues related to responsible use of technology and information and describe personal consequences of inappropriate use

Talk about why students should behave appropriately when using computers and describe what would happen if someone used it in the wrong way

   * What is in our district's Acceptable Use Agreement/Policy
   * What is meant by "personal/identifying information"
   * Define the term "netiquette"
   * Know what cyberbullying is and how it is harmful 

ABLE TO DO

   * List at least three personal consequences that would happen with inappropriate behavior
   * Practice good internet safety and netiquette practices in a safe, online social environment
   * Explain what cyberbullying/online harassment is, how it affects others, the legal consequences involved, and what to do if it happens

Instructional Strategies

   * Review the district's Acceptable Use Agreement/Policy
         o have students highlight the important information
         o discuss consequences related to inappropriate use of technology
         o explain why we have this policy and why we need to sign it 

Identifying information

   * Watch a webisode about "privacy and the Internet" from iSafe
   * Pause the video for discussion breaks about types of identifying information, safety practices, and inadvertently revealing information
   * Watch a webisode on cyber predators from iSafe and discuss the dangers of giving out information 

Cyberbullying

   * Watch a webisode on "online harassment" from iSafe
   * Pause the video for discussion breaks about how cyberbullying can occur
   * Come up with a list of steps you should take if you are harassed online 

Netiquette

   * Students will watch and participate in a teacher-created PowerPoint presentation on netiquette
   * Students will get to practice proper online social behavior through a secure, social networking site for school-age children at Think.com
   * Site is completely monitored by the teacher and students will received a graduated list of consequences should they break proper etiquette behavior online.

Assessment Strategies

Monitor student use of the school's social networking site and give feedback/consequences when necessary.
