Instructional Strategies
Note: Excel is covered heavily in 7th and 8th grade, so this is a basic introduction
* Class will review the basics of Microsoft Excel together
* Set up the workspace (standard & formatting toolbar, formula bar, formatting palette, view)
* Practice navigating
* Begin the spreadsheet by explaining (what do they do, are they important) and creating column headings:
o Student Name
o Age
o Gender
o Game system
o Favorite game
* Collect data
o Talk about the importance of getting names, spelling, info. exactly right
o Each individual will enter in their own information
o Everyone will go everyone else's computer and enter their personal information
o Clean up the data so it all matches and is correct
* Format the spreadsheet
o Adjust columns for information
o Change font
o Change color scheme
o Add borders
o Rename sheet
* Sort the data
o alphabetize
o use the sort feature to do (one sort, double sort)
o Sort by game system
* Create a chart using the chart wizard
o Compile the system data into a smaller table at the bottom of the other chart
o Select the appropriate data
o Choose a chart that will fit the data being represented
o Run through all of the options
o Create chart as a new sheet
* Format the chart
o Change the y-axis scale
o Change the colors
o Add pictures of each game system
Assessment Strategies
* Teacher will grade the assignment as each student gets finished * Since it was a class activity, grading will be based on whether or not a student has all of the required elements and the appearance is appealing and readable.
