Content Standard # Level

Demonstrate increasingly sophisticated operation of technology components

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

By the end of the quarter students will show that they can perform well enough on a computer to meet 6th grade expectations

KNOW

   * Proper keyboarding posture, hand, and finger positions
   * What a server is and does

ABLE TO DO

   * Type at least 20 wpm at 95% accuracy by the end of the quarter
   * Improve their typing score by 5wpm - 2% accuracy (up to 97% accuracy)
   * Successfully log into, navigate, and log out of the student server
   * Successfully save to their server folder
   * Troubleshoot when they cannot log into the server, or a document is saved incorrectly

Instructional Strategies

   * Students will go through all typing modules in their typing program
o They will use correct keyboarding posture, hand position, and finger movement
o Their hands will be covered with a keyboarding cover that will not impede movement (see picture below)
o Each module teaches them up to four keys

Server

   * Demonstrate the following proper procedures for students:
         o Logging in
         o Navigating to student folder
o Logging out while students watch
o Saving correctly to the student folder
o Saving incorrectly to either the hard drive or the school folder on the server
   * Go through it twice, slowly as a class
   * Demonstrate different problems people have had and ask students for troubleshooting solutions
   * Students will perform this process up to 30 times over the next two class periods for memorization

Assessment Strategies

Typing

   * Students will take a typing pre-test
   * After each module students will take a skill check to test their typing ability, they must pass it at 10wpm 90%accuracy in order to move on to the next lesson
   * After they go through all of the modules they will take a post-test
   * Every week they will take a typing test to check their skill improvement
   * Students not performing at level will take remedial typing

Server

   * Students will perform correct logging in, navigation, and logging out for a partner who reports their grade to the teacher
   * Students will demonstrate their ability to save correctly the server to the teacher
   * Students will demonstrate their ability to move a misplaced file to the right location to the teacher
   * Students not performing at level will watch a screen capture of the entire process and practice it again and again until they feel ready to retake the performance test.
