During our class discussion, the most frequently asked questions were:

Q: If copying cds and DVDs is illegal, then why do computers have cd/DVD burners?

A: It is OK to make a copy of a cd or DVD that you have purchased for your own personal use. In addition, if you are creating your own cd or DVD at home, then you need the burner to create it. The equipment itself is not illegal, it is what people do with it that matters.

Q: Can I copy a cd or DVD I own and give (or lend) the copy to a friend?

A: No. If you keep the original, and give away the copy then two people have the cd/DVD when only one person bought it. This causes economic harm to the creator, and is illegal.

Q: Is iTunes legal?

A: Yes. iTunes is a service where you pay for each individual song, cd, or video you download. Check the user license agreement for more information on what you can do with the songs/videos you download.

Q: Can I download songs from my friend's computer onto my MP3 player or iPod?

A: No. You did not pay for those songs (and maybe your friend didn't either), so it is illegal for you to own them.

Q: Can I give (or lend) a friend a cd or DVD I own?

A: Yes, as long as you don't keep a copy of it for yourself.
