ABLE TO DO

  • Explain copyright laws and "fair use" guidelines
  • List at least three examples of intellectual property
  • Attempt to obtain permission to use the work of others
  • Create citations for various types of media (pictures, video, quotes, etc.)
  • Given a list of scenarios, identify whether it is a violation of copyright or not

Instructional Strategies

  • Show the iSafe video "Intellectual Property"
  • Discussion questions:
    • Is plagiarism ever ok? If you forgot that a report is due on Monday, and a big part of your grade depends on it, and there's no way to get it done over the weekend, what do you do?
    • Should intellectual property be owned by the person or company who created it and be protected from copyright violation, or should it be shared freely?
    • What ideas do you have which might more equally balance the rights of copyright holders with our right to enjoy music, movies, etc. on the Internet?
    • Use the discussion checklist to record student responses

  • Determining Copyright violation
    • Using the Internet, students will then begin researching Copyright laws (some resources will be provided)
    • They will receive a handout describing specific scenarios in which they need to use the information they learn from the video, discussion, or Internet research to determine whether it is a copyright violation or not. Students may work in teams to accomplish this assignment.

  • Obtaining Permission
    • Students will write a sample letter to a company of their choice asking for permission to use a specific work in a school project.

  • Citation assignment
    • The following day, we will have a class discussion on citing sources. As a class we will create a citation for a specific book on the board.
    • Students will then receive a handout in which they will create a citation for a book on their own.
    • We will discuss whether or not creating a citation is easy, hard, or just time consuming. What prevents people from citing their sources all of the time?
    • Introduce students to the Son of Citation Machine on the net, and briefly demonstrate how to use it.
    • Once students feel comfortable, they will work individually on the rest of the handout to create citations for different digital resources (websites, computer programs, pictures, and videos).
    • Then students will "switch" papers, and they will review each others websites and citations for accuracy. The purpose of a citation is to allow another person to view the original work, therefore, the other student should be able to find all of the same information.
    • If any changes need to be made to the other person's paper, students can use the comments feature in Microsoft Word.
