Technology Standard 5.2 - Level 6

Evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, comprehensiveness and bias of electronic information sources

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

Decide whether or not an electronic resource is telling the truth, is usable for the project/assignment, gives you enough information, and figure out whose point of view the website is written from (and if it's appropriate).

  • The components of a URL
    • http:// = hypertext transfer protocol (usually not necessary)
    • www. = world wide web (not always necessary)
    • title of the site = ex. http://www.jkrowling.com
    • domain = .com, .org, .net, .mil, .gov, .edu, .uk
  • How to find the author/creator of a website

ABLE TO DO

  • Use the URL to determine the source of the information
  • Identify the author/creator of a website, and decide whether that person is an authority, has an accurate point of view, and is a primary or secondary source.
  • Evaluate three websites about a subject and determine which one is appropriate to use for research.
