Technology Standard 1.2 - Level 6 - Essential Skill

Demonstrate increasingly sophisticated operation of technology components

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

By the end of the quarter students will show that they can perform well enough on a computer to meet 6th grade expectations

Standard Unwrapped

KNOW

  • Proper keyboarding posture, hand, and finger positions
  • What a server is and does

ABLE TO DO

  • Type at least 15wpm - 92% accuracy by the end of the quarter
  • Improve their typing score by 5wpm - 2% accuracy (up to 97% accuracy)
  • Successfully log into, navigate, and log out of the student server
  • Successfully save to their server folder
  • Troubleshoot when they cannot log into the server, or a document is saved incorrectly

Instructional Strategies

Typing

  • Students will go through all typing modules in their typing program
    • They will use correct keyboarding posture, hand position, and finger movement
    • Their hands will be covered with a keyboarding cover that will not impede movement (see picture below)
    • Each module teaches them up to four keys

Server

  • Demonstrate the following proper procedures for students:
    • Logging in
    • Navigating to student folder
    • Logging out while students watch
    • Saving correctly to the student folder
    • Saving incorrectly to either the hard drive or the school folder on the server
  • Go through it twice, slowly as a class
  • Demonstrate different problems people have had and ask students for troubleshooting solutions
  • Students will perform this process up to 30 times over the next two class periods for memorization

Assessment Strategies

Typing

  • Students will take a typing pre-test
  • After each module students will take a skill check to test their typing ability, they must pass it at 10wpm 90%accuracy in order to move on to the next lesson
  • After they go through all of the modules they will take a post-test
  • Every week they will take a typing test to check their skill improvement
  • Students not performing at level will take remedial typing

Server

  • Students will perform correct logging in, navigation, and logging out for a partner who reports their grade to the teacher
  • Students will demonstrate their ability to save correctly the server to the teacher
  • Students will demonstrate their ability to move a misplaced file to the right location to the teacher
  • Students not performing at level will watch a screen capture of the entire process and practice it again and again until they feel ready to retake the performance test.
