ABLE TO DO Research each of the above documents and their period in history to interpret the United States' democratic ideas. Examine how these democratic ideas have developed, changed and maintained by identifying historical events that changed history or tried to. These events are listed below:
- Pilgrims/Jamestown/early colonization
- Lead-up to Revolutionary War
- Revolutionary War
- Growth of a new nation/creating a government
- Bill of Rights/Amendments and current issues surrounding them, such as recent Supreme Court Cases like Roe v. Wade and Brown v. Board of Education.
Instructional Strategies
- Paraphrase Pilgrim primary sources and explain their meanings to democracy
- Identify democratic ideals in the Virginia House of Burgesses (Jamestown)
- Write and perform a skit based on injustices from the British government before the Revolutionary War.
- Retell in own words what each of these documents means:
