  • Explain early colonization and the three primary countries that migrated to the Americas and identify factors that influenced location and distribution of economic activities.
  • Explain why and how countries trade goods and services.
    • Spain - Search for gold and jewels - settled in Latin America
    • France - Search for furs - settled in Canada and northern part of North America
    • Great Britain - Growth of Tobacco/Slave trade - settled on Atlantic coast of North America
  • 1776 to 1865: Discuss the role the U.S. played in trade goods and items around the world.
  • 1860-1865: Discuss the importance of cotton to the U.S. economy both for the North and for the South. Explain how each side could not live without it economically.

Instructional Strategies

  • Illustrate the important economic activities during Colonial times on a poster.
  • Explain in writing how each country had its own economic "pull" to America and what that economic activity did for that country.
  • Debate in a large classroom setting during a similation "Constitutional Convention" where each of the original 13 states debate the importance of factories, crops, and resources.
  • Report to class the importance of cotton to the Northern and Southern economies during the pre-Civil War era and after.
