Students know how various systems of government have developed and functioned throughout history.

  • identify the ancient and medieval roots of governmental principles and institutions (for example, Hammurabi's Code, Roman Republicanism, Mosaic Law, Greek Democracy, Islamic Law);
  • describe the basic forms of government, and giving examples of societies that have practiced them (for example, monarchy, oligarchy, clan/tribal, autocracy, dynasties, theocracy, republic, democracy);
  • describe how various other nations have pursued, established, and maintained democratic forms of government.
