Social Science Essential Skills for Level 6
First Quarter:
Students will:
- Know how to use and construct maps, globes, and other geographic tools to locate and derive information about people, places, and environments. Geography Standard 1
- Know the physical and human characteristics of places, and use this knowledge to define and study regions and their patterns of change. Geography Standard 2
- Understand how physical processes shape Earth’s surface patterns and systems. Geography Standard 3
- Understand how economic, political, cultural, and social processes interact to shape patterns of human populations, interdependence, cooperation, and conflict. Geography Standard 4
- Understand the effects of interactions between human and physical systems and the changes in meaning, use, distribution, and importance of resources. Geography Standard 5
- Apply knowledge of people, places, and environments to understand the past and present and to plan for the future. Geography Standard 6
Second Quarter:
Students will:
- Identify and locate the providences and territories of Canada. Geography Standard 1
- Describe physical characteristics of Canada. Geography Standard 2
- Know how the Earth-Sun relationships produce day, and night, time zones, seasons, and major climate variations in Canada and the U.S. Geography Standard 3
- Know fundamental geographic vocabulary and explain different land use patterns in urban, suburban and rural areas in Canada. Geography Standard 4
- Know the demographic structure of a population. Geography Standard 5
- Have an understanding of spatial distribution of cultures in Canada. Geography Standard 6
Third Quarter:
Students will:
- Draw an accurate map from memory to answer questions about location of physical and human cultures. Geography Standard 1
- Have an understanding of why each region was settled and explored. Geography Standard 2
- Develop an understanding and appreciation of different land uses in each region. Geography Standard 3
- Compare and contrast each of the regions in the U.S., physically, politically, and socially. Geography Standard 4
- Know how places and regions serve as a cultural symbol. Geography Standard 5
- Know how regions change due to human activity. Geography Standard 6
Fourth Quarter:
Students will:
- Identify and locate physical and human cultures of each of the four (?) in American regions. Geography Standard 1
- Discuss and explain the relationships of each Latin American country with the U.S. Geography Standard 2
- Develop and understanding as to why so may Latin Americans wish to come to America. Geography Standard 3
- Compare and contract the social, economic, and political societies of Latin America. Geography Standard 4
- Have an understanding of the cultural contributions given to the U.S. by our neighbors from the South. Geography Standard 5
- Describe and discuss conflict among people in the economic and social worlds of Latin America. Geography Standard 6
