Special Education Essential Skills for Level 9-12

The following essential skills are for an estimated four year program for Special Education students placed in the program.

  • Social Skills- Through discussion, role playing, critical thinking, and problems solving students will become aware of appropriate and inappropriate social skills for the school environment, job site, and social settings.
  • Money Recognition - Students will develop money awareness, identify coins and paper bills, and be able to count and make change for personal use and employment opportunities.
  • Time Recognition- Students will be able to read time on a standard and digital clock and associate the time to a schedule built for their independent living needs.
  • Budgeting- Building on money recognition students will develop an awareness of what a budget is and how to use it for independent living. Students will maintain a personal classroom checking account and budget.
  • Life Skills Reading- Students will be able to read environmental signs, work site signs, and community signs necessary for employment and independent living.
  • Organizational Skills- students will be able to recall events of the day and journal them to use as communication prompts for conversations with parents.
  • Housekeeping- Students will learn and implement independent housekeeping skills for independent living.
  • Basic Cooking: Students will know the five food groups, appropriate portion sizes, and basic nutritional information for planning and preparing food for independent living.
  • Personal Hygiene: Students will know and carry out the activities necessary for bathing, cleaning teeth and hair, use of personal care products, and dressing appropriately for school and work.
  • Job Seeking and Training: Students will explore locating jobs, filling out applications, preparing resumes, and interviewing. Students will maintain job training at various community locations under the supervision of a job coach.
