Writing Standard 2.2d - Speech
Develop main ideas and content fully focused on a prompt with relevant, thorough, and effective support.
Standard in Kid Friendly Language
After choosing a topic the student will develop main points which focus on that topic and are supported with material that is relevant to the topic; effectively supports the main idea with facts, statistics, examples, testimonials; and thoroughly covers the necessary information.

Vocabulary: relevant, thorough, effective, support
ABLE TO DO
Choose a topic that fits the assignment and is of interest to the speaker.
Develop two to four main points for that topic and create a thesis/preview statement based on those main points.
Develop or locate (research) supporting material for the main points discussed in the speech.
Instructional Strategies
Students will receive instruction, guidance and practice in how to choose and narrow a topic for each type of speech assigned throughout the semester.
We will examine speeches (oral and written) which contain both strong and weak examples of support.
Assessment Strategies
This skill will be assessed within the rubrics used for scoring individual speeches, especially those which require research and longer speeches such as the personal experience speech which requires detailed support.
Resources
Incorporate a variety of material into speech when appropriate - This standard contains information on creating works cited and on doing research.
Speech: Communication Matters, Second Edition - McCutcheon, Schaffer, and Wycoff with accompanying videos, worksheets, activities, and tests.

Getting Started in Public Speaking by James Payne and Diana Prentice
Projects and Activities
