Physics Essential Skills for Level 13

First Semester:

Students will be able to:

  • Solve torque problems.
  • Identify a measurement as either a scalar or vector quantity.
  • Solve “elevator” problems.
  • Differentiate between static and kinetic friction.
  • Determine efficiency of a simple machine.
  • Determine tension for static equilibrium problems.
  • Apply Pascal’s Principle in a hydraulic system.
  • Determine angular speed and acceleration.
  • Research and develop an independent science fair research project.

Second Semester:

Students will be able to:

  • Understand the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance (i.e. apply Ohm’s Law).
  • Calculate the speed of sound in various materials.
  • Solve problems using Hooke’s Law.
  • Determine current, power, and resistance in an electric series.
  • Experimentally conduct an independent research project. (Conduct experiments, write a report, and present findings.)
  • Experimentally verify the law of conservation of momentum for one-dimensional motion.
  • Solve problems involving Kirchhoff’s Laws.
  • Determine the size and location of an image produced by either a plane or concave
