Science Essential Skills for Level 8

First Quarter:

Students will:

  • Understand cell and cell theory.
  • Identify and explain cell parts, including organelles.
  • Show the differences between plant and animal cells.
  • Explain how scientific investigations work.
  • Identify differences between living and nonliving entities.
  • Decide whether viruses are living or nonliving.
  • Assemble DNA helix models and explain the process of protein synthesis.

Science Essential Skills for Level 8

Second Quarter:

Students will:

  • Know DNAs function and structure as it relates to heredity, replication, and protein synthesis.
  • Know chromosome, alleles, genes, and traits as it applies to heredity.
  • Know how traits are passed from generation to generation.
  • Be able to predict outcomes from genetic crosses using a punnette square model.
  • Understand how mutations in organisms occur, and how they are harmful and/or beneficial.
  • Understand how genetic engineering can help in fighting diseases and creating better food products.

Third Quarter:

Students will:

  • Compare chromosome numbers of living organisms and distinguish between haploid and diploid numbers.
  • Illustrate dominance and recessive traits.
  • Illustrate Punnette squares.
  • Discuss genetic engineering.


Fourth Quarter:

Students will:

 Identify how organisms transport nutrients and waste [open or closed circulatory system]
 Identify how organisms exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.
 Understand communicable or noncommunicable diseases and how these diseases are transmitted.
 Understand the process of sexual and asexual reproduction in relation to chromosome number.
 Explain how the human body systems work together to maintain homeostasis in a living organism.
