KNOW

Need to know Life Science concepts of ecology.

  • Nitrogen, oxygen, and water cycles
  • Ecosystems including food chains and food webs
  • Biomes

ABLE TO DO

  • Sketch and label the nitrogen, oxygen, and water cycles
  • Define parts of the ecosystem
  • Identify parts of the ecosystem
  • Explain how parts of the ecosystem interact
  • Map different biomes of the world
  • Explain some basic plants and animals found in each biome
  • Investigate and predict the outcome of global warming on the continent's ecosystems

Instructional Strategies

The Rain Forest ProjectThe Rain forest Project is a role playing activity that allows the students to explore the many issues surrounding the Rain forest. Students will be assigned the role of one of these experts and be expected to research that expert's field. They will decide their position based upon the research they have conducted and assume the role. Make a presentation to the class of the position that they will take before the World Council and engage in a debate with their classmates to determine the fate of the Amazon Rain forest.

Resources

Science Website on Biomes and EcosystemsSite provides amazing examples/pictures of all biomes and the plants and animals found in each. Excellent research tool on biomes and freshwater/marine ecosystems.

National Geographic Lesson on Antarctica: A Cold Desert EcosystemIn this lesson students will construct a rough map of Antarctic ecosystems and explore relationships among the creatures that populate them. [Note: This lesson can be adapted to focus on other regions, including the one in which you live.]
