Plants have life cycles.

What are the stages in the life cycle of a plant?

- Name the basic needs of all plants (light, water, air)

- Identify the parts a plant

- Identify the stages in the plant life cycle

- Observe and draw several types of seeds and the way they are dispersed

Skills

Process Skills:

  • list process skills

Plants:

  • describe the basic needs of plants- discuss needs after reading "Tiny Seed"
  • identify parts of plants- discuss parts of plants and make own plants with parts; worksheet
  • identify the stages in the plants life cycle- use lima bean to look at different stages; read and discuss "Tiny Seed"

Tracks, traces, habitats, and seasonal changes are all around us.

What are some tracks, traces, and habitats of local wildlife and signs of the seasons?

-Observe local tracks and traces

-Name three living and nonliving elements of a habitat

-List and describe signs of fall

Skills

HABITATS/TRACKS AND TRACES:

  • use tub show different scat and traces of different animals
  • have the children observe tracks, traces, and signs of fall at Jackson Lake

General Health:

Standards:

  • 3. Students know and understand the characteristics and structure of living things, the processes of life, and how living things interact with each other and their environment.

People need to maintain a healthy body.

What are the ways second graders maintain a healthy body?

-Explain the differences between the positive and negative uses of drugs

-Describe ways to maintain a healthy body

-List ways to stay safe

EAR:

Standards:

  • 2.1 Recognize that energy can affect common objects to make sounds
  • 2.2 Make observations associated with sound energy
  • 3. Students know and understand the characteristics and structure of living things, the processes of life, and how living things interact with each other and their environment.

The ear is an organ of sound.

What are the main parts of the ear and what causes sound?

-Describe and use common objects to make sounds

-Describe differences in sounds

-List different ways sound travels

-Tell that sound travels in vibrations

-Label and describe the parts and functions of the ear

EYE:

Standards:

  • 2.Students know and understand common properties, forms, and changes in matter and energy.
  • 3. Students know and understand the characteristics and structure of living things, the processes of life, and how living things interact with each other and their environment.

The eye is the organ of sight.

What are the main parts of the eye and how do we see?

-Label and describe the parts and functions of the eye

-Explain the importance of light in relation to sight

Skills

GENERAL HEALTH:

  • understand the processes of life- life cycle of a frog and butterfly; circle of life
  • how living things interact with each other and their environment- food chain
  • explain differences between positive and negative drugs- drug free week
  • describe ways to maintain a healthy body- nutrition: introduce food pyramid, video, make own food pyramid, fruit taste test, learn how to make a balanced meal, discuss eating right, exercise, and sleep
