Reading:
Understanding the reading/thinking/learning process is first. Using the text, the teacher will give examples of how to: use/activate prior knowledge; make predictions; elaborate (combine new information with prior knowledge to expand knowledge) and confirm and revise predictions. Second, metacognitive strategies are taught as they relate to the reading process. Finally, comprehension strategies
Actual reading will be done using the Neurological Impress Method. In this method the teacher reads fluently with expression at the same time the students follow along holding the place with a card. With the students sitting in a circle the teacher will take turns reading from each student’s book. The teacher will read directly into that student’s ear. The teacher never stops simply to discuss comprehension or word recognition. Daily pre-reading instruction includes reminders about the steps of the reading process. Daily post-reading self-evaluation includes discussion and/or completion of the rubrics of the reading process.
Writing:
Following the reading of a section, each student will write down the information (facts/details/events) from the novel which explains how s/he used the reading process. The teacher will explain this differently for each step. Again, this will be done for each step throughout the reading of the novel. Format for each individual step is included in the resources. .
After reading one chapter of The Call of the Wild each student will list the four most important events in the order they occurred. Think/pair/share will be used for discussion and II. Events from the Chapter Summary will be the format.
After reading the entire novel students will synthesize their knowledge by discussing conflicts, possible themes, and author's purpose to help students develop a personal statement of theme which they can support with examples from the book.
