Instructional Strategies

Familiarize students with common suffixes and prefixes Weekly Roots Vocabulary

Teach connotations and denotations: negative, positive, neutral associations and emotional overtones

  • Puzzling (mildly confusing) vs. bewildered (hopelessly confusing)

Teach loaded and suggestive words

  • Words that have especially strong positive or negative connotations (ecstatic, jubilant, hilarious) or (oppressive, dreary, melancholy)

List content vocabulary for a particular story; show relevancy
