Reading Essential Skills for Level 10

Sophomore Literature:

Students will be able to:

  • Determine meanings of words by using context and structural clues. Reading Standard 1f
  • Locate meanings, pronunciations, and derivations of unfamiliar words by using dictionaries, glossaries, and other sources. Reading Standard 5f
  • Apply literary terminology and knowledge of literary techniques to understand text. Reading Standard 6b
  • Identify author’s viewpoint, purpose, and historical/cultural context from information presented in the text. Reading Standard 4a
  • Analyze a variety of text in order to make predictions, draw conclusions, determine main and supporting ideas, determine sequence of events or procedures, determine facts and opinions, infer by making connections, and identify theme, providing support from the text. Reading Standard 1c,1d,4d,6c
  • Paraphrase, organize and synthesize information from a variety of sources. Reading Standard 5c

Sophomore Speech & Writing:

Students will:

  • Write (and speak) in a variety of genre including expository, technical, persuasive, narrative, and descriptive for specific purposes. Reading Standard 2a
  • Use vivid and precise words, imagery, and figurative language as appropriate to audience and purpose. Reading Standard 2i
  • Use standard English usage in writing (and speaking), including subject/verb agreement, agreement of pronoun and its antecedent, parallel structure, and correct modifiers. Reading Standard 3b
  • Plan, draft, revise, and edit for a final copy. Reading Standard 2b
