Reading Essential Skills for Level 8

First Quarter

Student will be able to:

  • Analyze main idea and supporting details in a variety of text and genres (determining what is relevant). Reading Standard 1.c
  • Identify the meaning of unfamiliar words in context (including dialect and content reading) using word recognition skills and context clues. Reading Standard 1.g
  • Identify an author’s purpose and the text’s historical/cultural context from information presented in the text. Reading Standard 4.a
  • Locate meanings, pronunciations, and derivations of unfamiliar words using dictionaries, glossaries, and other sources. Reading Standard 5.f
  • Read and respond to a variety of literature (for example: novels, poetry, short stories, nonfiction and plays) that represents perspectives from places, people, and events that are familiar and unfamiliar. Reading Standard 6.a
  • Apply literary terminology and knowledge of literary techniques (including, but not limited to, rising action, style, mood, setting, protagonist, antagonist, point of view, foreshadowing, personification, or flashback) to understand text. Reading Standard 6.b
  • Read given text, identify the theme, and provide support from the text. (A bit of a sleeper. Points range from 0 to 6). Reading Standard 6.c
  • Understand how figurative language (symbolism, alliteration, simile, metaphor) supports meaning in a given context. Reading Standard 6.d

Second Quarter:

Student will be able to:

  • Summarize, synthesize, and evaluate information from a variety of text and genres (for example: Internet, technical text, letters, diaries, and biographies). Reading Standard 1b
  • Sequence events and procedures. Reading Standard 1.e
  • Infer using information from a variety of text and genres. Reading Standard 1.d
  • Analyze text to make predictions and draw conclusions. Reading Standard 4.d
  • Analyze the text’s main idea and use relevant details to support the analysis. Reading Standard 4.e
  • Use organizational features of printed text (for example: annotations, citations, bibliographic references) to locate relevant information.) Reading Standard 5.a
  • Use organizational features of electronic information (for example, keyword searches and email addresses) to locate relevant information. Reading Standard 5.b
  • Summarize and synthesize information about a topic in a variety of ways (specifically, graphic organizer, Venn diagram, among others) from a variety of references, technical sources, and media. Reading Standard 5.c
  • Evaluate information for specific needs and credibility. Reading Standard 5.d
  • Give credit for others’ ideas, images, or information in an appropriate form. Reading Standard 5.e
  • Locate meanings, parts of speech, and derivations of unfamiliar words, using dictionaries, glossaries, and other sources. Reading Standard 5.f

Third Quarter:

Student will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast a variety of texts with similar themes and ideas (specifically, American historical novels, short stories, speeches and articles; science fiction, diaries, and plays, among others). Reading Standard 1.a
  • Locate and recall information in different text structures (for example: cause and effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast). Reading Standard 1.f
  • Use reading and writing skills to identify problems, list possible solutions, and answer questions. Reading Standard 4.b
  • Give credit for others’ ideas, images, or information in an appropriate form. Reading Standard 5.e
  • Develop a thesis statement about a particular text and provide support from the text. Reading Standard 6.d

Fourth Quarter:

Student will be able to:

  • Identify the meaning of unfamiliar words in context using word recognition skills and context clues. Reading Standard 1.g
  • Sequence events and procedures. Reading Standard 1.e
  • Use reading and writing skills to identify problems, list possible solutions, and answer questions. (speech mode) Reading Standard 4.b
  • Give credit for others’ ideas, images, or information in an appropriate form. Reading Standard 5.e
  • Read and respond to a variety of literature (for example: novels, poetry, short stories, non-fiction and plays) that represents perspectives from places, people, and events that are familiar and unfamiliar. Reading Standard 6.a
