Reading Standard 6.d - Level 8

Understand how figuratvie language supports meaning in a given text.

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

Understand how figures of speech (such as, but not limited to similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, and others) give more meaning to a piece of literature.

Identify various figures of speech. (See resources listed for lists of figures of speech).

Select figures of speech used in given text.

Find and explain uses and purposes of specified figures of speech in given text.

Provide and create examples to illustrate figures of speech.

Interrelate and distinguish between (compare/contrast) figures of speech, such as simile and metaphor, or hyperbole and understatement.

Instructional Strategies

Pre-teach figurative language before a given unit so that students can look for examples as they read.

After reading a short piece of text selected for its figures of speech, discuss student "findings."

Study interrelated figures of speech together so that students learn their similarities and differences. Use Venn diagrams when applicable to differentiate.

Assessment Strategies

Given a list of figures of speech, write a definition in own words and provide an example.

Match a list of figures of speech to the examples provided.

Given a piece of text, fiction or nonfiction, categorize a list of identified figures of speech.

Figurative language resources and links, PowerPoints, etc.

Projects and Activities

Make an ongoing list of figures of speech on a bulletin board or classroom chart. Add more as additional readings provide examples.

In small groups, create idiom posters, in which common idioms are expressed. Illustrate them literally to exaggerate the main idea of the idioms.

Add figures of speech to Academic Vocabulary lists as they are encountered. Illustrate with examples or visuals.
