Reading Standard 4.a - Level 8

Identify an author’s purpose and the text’s historical/cultural context from information presented in the text.

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

Give the author's purpose (reason) for creating a given piece of writing (to inform, persuade, or entertain) using the content and details of the writing.

Provide the historical/cultural background or use in a piece of writing, using the content and details that are given or inferred.

Instructional Strategies

Model the determination of various author's purposes for different readings by using a "think-aloud" strategy for each of them.

Provide given readings using different author's purposes; analyze, discuss, and label them.

Use various readings to compare and contrast the details that constitute a specific author's purpose to inform, persuade, or entertain.

Gather various examples of grade level historical writings (fiction and nonfiction) to be placed in a timeline to identify their contextual references.

Gather various examples of grade level writings with cultural details, overtones or inferences to identify and/or categorize them.

Assessment Strategies

Given a specific piece of literature that the student has not previously read, the student will correctly identify the author's purpose, using the instructional strategies as needed.

Given the author's purpose for a piece of literature, the student will determine the details.

Using an outline or details from a piece of literature provided, the student will determine the author's purpose.

Given a list of suggested purposes, the student will select the best or correct one.

Independently, the student will orally state or write the author's purpose of a given piece and defend why it is the purpose.

Select appropriate traditional and popular song lyrics to locate and analyze references to various historical/cultural contexts.

Discuss, compare and contrast various examples of author's purpose and historical/cultural context models, using tables, charts, or other graphic organizers.

Create a model of historical/cultural contexts or an author's purpose, using samples of writing from various genres.
