Instructional Strategies
While reading, record/write details, or highlight the details that are of most importance.
1. In a fictional short story, play, or novel, make a plot diagram of major elements. Identify details that occur for each part.
Then,using the details from the major plot elements, summarize the main idea of the story or novel.
2. In a nonfiction article or novel, outline or list the major thoughts or topics and subtopics.
Then, using the details from the nonfiction reading, determine the author's purpose for the piece of writing.
3. In a poem, identify the style of poetry (lyric, ballad, etc.) and the details that support that style.
Then, using the identified style and details, determine the main idea of the poem's content.
4. Analyze a list of selected details about a reading to determine the main idea.
Assessment Strategies
Given a specific piece of literature that the student has not previously read, the student will correctly identify the main idea, using the instructional strategies as needed.
Using a plot diagram or outline from a piece of literature provided, the student will determine the main idea.
Given the main idea for a piece of literature, the student will determine the details.
Given a list of suggested main ideas, the student will select the best or correct one.
Independently, the student will orally state or write the main idea of a given piece and defend why it is the main idea or purpose.

Projects and Activities
- Predict a main idea before reading, using the title, pulled or highlighted quotes, or illustrations in a text. Verify it after reading.
- As a whole class, read a short fiction or nonfiction piece and discuss and identify the important details. Organize them in a graphic organizer.
- As a class or small group, create a list of possible main ideas or author's purposes. Using the important details from the selection, select the best main idea/purpose from the list.
- Within a group of three to five students, or with one peer, identify important details on a plot diagram. Identify the main idea.
- While reading, highlight details in readings in the student literature worktexts in order to determine main idea or purpose.
- After reading a given piece orally or silently, practice selection of a main idea from a list of choices. Discuss why one choice is better than the other ones.
- Create chapter titles for a novel that is read that does not contain chapter titles, in order to practice creating main ideas from a reading.
- Create a new title for a story, novel, play, poem, or article.
