Content Reading Standard 6.b - Level 7

Use literary terminology accurately (for example, setting character, conflict, plot resolution, dialect, and point of view).

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

All through the year you will learn and practice literary terminologies, such as, plot, character, conflict, rhyme, point of view, etc.

Standard Unwrapped

KNOW Students will know what several literary terminologies stands for.

ABLE TO DO Students will be able to give examples of different conflicts, character types, and settings.

Instructional Strategies

I teach each literary terminology based on short stories from the text book. But I also give students definitions:

ex.: Setting = when and where the action takes place.

There are several different types of conflicts:

1. within the character (ex.: shyness),

2. between character(s) versus character(s),

3. character fighting the elements of nature, and

4. character fighting supernatural elements.

Projects and Activities

(For point of view see Standard 4.a)

Item One- Rhyme Activity

Students are working with a partner or in groups of three. They brainstorm, for about 6 minutes, on topics they would like to write a rhyming poem or lyric about. Then they chose one and write the poem or (hip-hop, rap) lyric. Time devoted to this activity should be about 15 minutes. Volunteers can share what they came up with, but everybody has to hand it in.
