Reading Standard 5.e - Level 7

Locate others’ ideas, images, or information in a bibliography, works cited page, or text features.

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

You will be able to find information that you are looking for in bibliographies, work cited pages, parentheses, footnotes, etc.

Standard Unwrapped

KNOW Students will know that they should not misregard additional information related to a text and they will know how to locate information.

ABLE TO DO Students will be able to locate bibliography, works cited page, and text features.

Instructional Strategies

I concentrate a lot on this standard all throughout the year. For example when we read True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi in class we practice locating the author's ideas, and images. On the first day of the novel unit, I ask students to turn the pages of the book to the illustration of Seehawk, the ship (pg. 122). I ask them to go to this page any time they get to description of certain parts of the ship and they cannot visualize it. I also ask the students to read the footnotes, for clarification, as we advance in the reading.

Assessment Strategies

Item One

Students have to do research papers which will be formally assessed. For example, they have to do a research paper and presentation on events related to the day of their birth. (See: Birthday Project under "Projects and Activities").
