Reading Standard 4.e Level 7

Explain the text’s main point and use relevant details to support the explanation.

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

You will be able to make clear what the most important information is in a text and give examples from the text in connection with it.

Standard Unwrapped

KNOW Students will know

  • what main idea means in a text,
  • what the main idea is in a text,
  • how to select three-four details to support it, and
  • how to use a graphic organizer in connection with main idea.

ABLE TO DO Students will be able to identify the main idea in different texts (ex.: newspaper article), and to use main idea related graphic organizers.

Instructional Strategies

I will explain how to identify the main idea and supporting details in a text by using various methods, for example, I will show the video from the video sample resource because the best way to understand this concept is by having both visual and auditive input of an example (or several examples).

Assessment Strategies

Students are assessed on main idea all through the year. As we read the short stories we discuss the main idea.
