Reading Standard 1.d - Level 7

Make reasonable inferences from information that is implied but not directly stated.

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

You are going to build a story by making predictions about what happens in the picture book (message is implied in the visual information).

Standard Unwrapped

KNOW Students will know that there are various ways to interpret the same information.


ABLE TO DO Students are going to be able to write a meaningful story based on visual information (picture book).

Instructional Strategies

Item One

(Under Standard 1.c teacher presents a specific example related to Item One under "Projects and Activities.") At the beginning of class teacher gives a lead sentence example that students can either use or change for their stories. Lead sentence: "Here are your delicious rolling strawberries; you might want to put them in your bag, they are very slippery."

Item Two

As part of instruction teacher shows, on the overhead, excellent peer examples of stories based on pictures from previous year.

Item Three

Help students see connections between causes and their effects and/or problems and their solutions by using the CAUSE/EFFECT (OR PROBLEM/SOLUTION) handout from the "Resources".

Assessment Strategies

Teacher mostly assesses by observation while monitoring the class. Group presentation will be assessed according to the rubric (See "Resources").

Projects and Activities

Item One

Students work in pairs of three or four and come up with a story for the picture book: The Gray Lady and the Strawberry Snatcher. Time for this activity is approximately three days. The fourth day students read/present their stories in front of the class.

Item Two

Story Behind the Picture Several times throughout the year students are asked to practice making up stories based on individual pictures.
