Reading Standard 1.c - Level 7

Determine the main idea or essential message in a text.

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

You will be able to find what the most important message of a text is.

Standard Unwrapped

KNOW Students will know that not every information is essential.

ABLE TO DO Students will be able to find the overall meaning of a passage.

Instructional Strategies

While working on Story Maps (see 1.b) teacher models and students practice finding the main idea in different texts. Under "Projects and Activities" there is an activity "Got Any Wise Ideas" that is excellent for determining the essential message in a paragraph. I do the first three (1-3) points with the students, on the overhead projector, (guided practice) then have students finish the rest (4-8)(Individual practice). When students are done we check the answers.

Assessment Strategies

Students are informally assessed through several class room discussions on main idea in connection with short stories read from the text book. Teacher gives credits for the work sheet, "Can You Describe It,? done in class, and other exercises focusing on the main idea.
