Reading Standard 1.b - Level 7
Summarize text read (for example, newspaper and magazine articles, technical writing, stories and poetry).
Standard in Kid Friendly Language
You will practice how to find the gist of a text (for example: newspaper and magazine articles, stories, and poetry) and will be able to summarize them.
Standard Unwrapped
KNOW Students will know what the gist of a text is.
ABLE TO DO Students will be able to:
- summarize different types of texts,
- use graphic organizers.
Instructional Strategies
Teacher models summarizing text through interactive discussions and/or by filling out story maps with students. (See Story Map under "Resources" and Item Four under "Projects and Activities")
Assessment Strategies
Students will be assessed based on how well they can summarize certain short stories. From time to time at the beginning or end of the class I ask students to summarize what we previously read and discussed in class. Story Maps will usually have to be filled out by students after reading a short story; teacher grades it.

"Reading Strategies"-Finding the main idea in newspaper articles In lack of DVD either leave out step 1. from "Procedures" or watch video sample clip.
