Reading Standard 1.a - Level 7

Compare and contrast texts with similar characters, plots and/or themes.

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

We will read different kinds of text in class and then compare them. We will analyze the similarities and differences between the characters, events and/or messages of different writings.

Standard Unwrapped

KNOW Students will realize that there are universal themes that are relevant in several texts. They will know that there are various stereotypical characters identifiable across a vast range of writings. Students will know how to compare plots (sequence of events) to each other.

ABLE TO DO Students will be able to think about a text in a deeper level than simply summarizing it. They will be able to compare it to several other texts.

Instructional Strategies

With the help of Venn Diagrams it is very easy to teach comparing and contrasting texts.

Assessment Strategies

I use informal (discussions) and formal assessment (test, quiz) to assess student's knowledge. For ex.: Test on "Aschenputtel" (German version of Cinderella). Students are assessed in writing by being asked to put down as many similarities and differences between the film and the readings as they can (At least five differences and five similarities).

Resources

Check out a Model on comparing and contrasting the writer with her fictional character.

Projects and Activities

Item One

We are going to read several versions of the Cinderella story from the text book (pgs. 592-624). As we are reading them we refer back to the previously read version(s). After finishing reading and discussions on the stories we are going to watch the musical version of it and then compare it to the readings.

Item Two

For different versions of Cinderella go to "Compare and Contrast and to "Comparing Different Versions"(To run this program Kidspiration/Inspiration is needed.)
