Reading Essential Skills for Level 5
First Quarter:
Vocabulary / Gathering & Summarizing Information
Students will be able to:
- Extract the main ideas and important details from fiction and non fiction in order to summarize text Standard 1b-c
- Identify appropriate word meanings with context clues Standard 1g
- Organize information utilizing graphic organizers such as venn diagrams, technical, and media Standard 5c
Second Quarter:
Locating Information / Plot Line Development
Students will be able to:
- Identify and use plot line components Standard 6b
- Locate information Standard 5a
- Locate and paraphrase main ideas & supporting details in fiction and non fiction Standard 1c
- Summarize fiction & non fiction
- Determine Author’s purpose Standard 4a
- Organize information utilizing outlining and timelines Standard 5c
Third Quarter:
Literature Techniques, Predictions, Conclusions
Students will be able to:
- Use literary techniques for understanding text such as foreshadowing and figurative language Standard 6c
- Make predictions and draw conclusions Standard 4d, 1d
- Use dictionary correctly Standard 5f
Fourth Quarter:
Electronic gathering & Interpreting Information
Students will be able to:
- Fact and Opinion Standard 4c
- Use electronic information Standard 5b
