Reading Essential Skills for Level 4

First Quarter:

Student will be able to:

  • Draw inferences using contextual clues. Reading Standard 1.d
  • Use word recognition skills and resources (for example, phonics, context clues, picture clues, reference guides, roots, prefixes and suffixes of words) for comprehension. Reading Standard 1.g
  • Identify supporting details and main idea. Reading Standard 1.c
  • Use a full range of strategies to comprehend a variety of texts. Reading Standard 1.a
  • Recognize genre organization to set a purpose. Reading Standard 1.f
  • Identify story elements: Setting, Plot, Character, Problem, and Solution. Reading Standard 6.b
  • Read & respond to a variety of literature (for example, Fiction-short stories and novels, poetry, non-fiction, and read aloud). Reading Standard 6.a

Second Quarter:

Student will be able to:

  • Make predictions and draw conclusions about stories. Reading Standard 4.d
  • Use a full range of strategies to comprehend a variety of texts. Reading Standard 1.a
  • Select appropriate definitions from the dictionary, glossaries, and other sources. Reading Standard 5.f
  • Recognize genre organization to set a purpose. Reading Standard 1.f
  • Read & respond to a variety of literature (for example, Fiction-short stories and novels, poetry, non-fiction, and read aloud). Reading Standard 6.a
  • Differentiate fact from opinion. Reading Standard 4.c
  • Use reading to define and solve problems: charts, graphs, schedules, and tables. Reading Standard 4.b

Third Quarter:

Student will be able to:

  • Summarize long text passages (for example, Fiction-short stories and Non-fiction-poetry and articles). Reading Standard 1.b
  • Determine author’s purpose and point of view. Reading Standard 4.a & e
  • Identify sequential order in expository text. Reading Standard 1.e
  • Use organizational features of printed text to locate information (chapter heading, table of contents, indexes, captions.) Reading Standard 5.a
  • Use a full range of strategies to comprehend a variety of texts. Reading Standard 1.a
  • Read & respond to a variety of literature (for example, Fiction-short stories and novels, poetry, non-fiction, and read aloud). Reading Standard 6.a


Fourth Quarter:

Student will be able to:

  • Use a full range of strategies to comprehend a variety of texts. Reading Standard 1.a
  • Choose appropriate resources for a particular topic. Reading Standard 5.d
  • Recognize genre organization. Reading Standard 1.f
  • Take notes by identifying main ideas from resource (for example, model note taking and utilize teacher note taking templates). Reading Standard 5.c
  • Read & respond to a variety of literature (for example, Fiction-short stories and novels, poetry, non-fiction, and read aloud). Reading Standard 6.a
