Reading Essential Skills for Level 3
First Quarter
Students will be able to:
- Use word recognition skills and resources for comprehension, concentrating this quarter on phonics, picture clues, and context clues, followed by using root words, prefixes, and suffixes (1.g)
- Will draw inferences, specifically: predicting and drawing conclusions (1.d)
- Fit information into an organized pattern, for example, chronological order (1.f)
- Find the sequence of steps, for example, events in a story (1.e)
- Summarize text passages, for example, short fictional passages, followed by longer fictional passages and non-fictional passages (1.b)
Second Quarter
Students will be able to:
- Use word recognition skills and resources for comprehension: captions, definitions, and tip boxes (1.g)
- Summarize passages using specific story details and correct sequence (1.b)
- Identify the main idea and find information to support ideas (1.c)
- Draw inferences using contextual clues (1.d)
- Summarize text passages: poetry (1.b)
- Make predictions and draw conclusions (4.d)
Third Quarter
Students will be able to:
- Use word recognition skills to aid in comprehension (1.g)
- Draw inferences, including the main idea from contextual clues (1.d)
- Sequence events and steps in a story (1.e)
- Fit materials into organizational patterns, including chronological order (1.f)
- Identify the main idea and use information to support ideas (1.c)
- Summarize a fictional and non-fictional passage using specific examples from the story (1.b)
Fourth Quarter
Students will be introduced to the following concepts:
- Compare and contrast stories and story elements (1.f)
- Distinguish between fact and opinion (4.c)
- Use a dictionary to find the meanings and spellings of words (5.f)
- Identify the Author’s purpose in different types of writings (4.a)
