Reading Essential Skills for Level 1

First Quarter:

Students will be able to:

  • Use two reading strategies of the following: (1.g)
    • One to one correspondence,
    • Picture clues,
    • Decoding words,
    • Context clues,
    • Skips a word and rereads for meaning,
    • Self-corrects to make sense,
    • Syntax clues.
  • Recognize upper and lower case alphabet. (1.g)
  • Give the phonemic sounds for all 26 letters of the alphabet. (1.g)
  • Recognize 95-100% vocabulary on an individual reading inventory at level 3 or above. (Rigby)(1.g)
  • Orally answer comprehension questions about passage read during an IRI at level 3 or above with at least 75% accuracy. (Rigby)(1.g)
  • Recognize and read 30 or more high frequency words.(1.g)

Second Quarter

Students will be able to:

  • Use three or more reading strategies of the following: (1.g)
    • One to one correspondence,
    • Picture clues,
    • Decoding words,
    • Context clues,
    • Skips a word and rereads for meaning,
    • Self-corrects to make sense.
  • Recognize and read 75 or more high frequency words. (1.j)
  • Recognize 95-100% vocabulary on an individual reading inventory at level 8 or above. (Rigby) (1.g)
  • Orally answer comprehension questions about passage read during an IRI at level 8 or above with 75% accuracy. (Rigby) (1.a)
  • Identify characters and setting orally for reading passages. a.ix(6.b)
  • Identify events in the beginning, middle and end of a reading passage. (1.e)
  • Second quarter phonics assessment percentages (80-94%).

Third Quarter

Students will be able to:

  • Use four or more reading strategies of the following: (1.g)
    • One to one correspondence,
    • Picture clues,
    • Decoding words,
    • Context clues,
    • Skips a word and rereads for meaning,
    • Self-corrects to make sense,
  • Recognize and read 125 or more high frequency words. (1.j)
  • Recognize 95-100% vocabulary on an individual reading inventory at level 12 or above. (Rigby) (1.g)
  • Orally answer comprehension questions about passage read during an IRI at level 12 or above with 75% accuracy. (Rigby)(1.a)
  • Orally identify the problem and solution of a story read during the IRI Assessment. (Rigby) (1.f)
  • Third quarter phonics assessment percentages. (80-94%)

Fourth Quarter

Students will be able to:

  • Use five or more reading strategies of the following: (1.g)
    • One to one correspondence,
    • Picture clues,
    • Decoding words,
    • Context clues,
    • Skips a word and rereads for meaning,
    • Self-corrects to make sense,
  • Recognize and read 150 or more high frequency words. 3.01(1)(d)(i),(1.j)
  • Recognize 95-100% vocabulary on an individual reading inventory at level 17 or above. (Rigby)3.01(1)(a)(iv),(1.g)
  • Orally answer comprehension questions about passage read during an IRI at level 17 or above with at least 75% accuracy. (Rigby) (1.b)

  • Quarter quarter phonics assessment percentages (80-94%)

Quarter not identified

Students will be able to:

  • Letter name recognition (52 letter, capital/lower). (1.g)
  • Letter sound recognition (all 52 basic sounds + ch, th, sh, wh). (1.g)
  • Decodes using short/long vowels (ae, ee, ie, oe, ue,oa, ai, ea). (1.g)
  • Use word family patterns to decode suffixes. (1.g)
  • Phoneme segmentation. (1.g)
  • Rhyming words – rime identification. (1.g)
