Math Standard (2.1a) 2-C

Preschool learners begin to recognize, duplicate, and create patterns and use them to make predictions.

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

You will be able to tell the pattern on the calendar and repeat it and tell me what is coming next. You will be able to make a pattern with blocks, bears, and anything else you can think of.

Instructional Strategies

  • Calendar - On the calendar numbers there are patterns. Children as a whole group repeat the pattern and are then asked what comes tomorrow, what was yesterday, what was yesterday.
  • Encourage children to create, identify, match, and describe patterns in objects, designs, pictures, movement activities and recurring events.
  • Encourage the children to begin to predict what comes next in the context of a pattern or sequence of events.

Projects and Activities

  • Have the children make a necklace, or bracelet out of beads. Have them make a pattern with the beads and continue until their necklace or bracelet is finished.
