Math Standard (2.1a) 2A & 2E & 6A - Level PK
- (2A) - Preschool learners explore the attributes of objects and begin to label, classify and sort by similar traits such as shape, color and size.
- (2E) - Preschool learners begin to recognize charts and graphs as a way of collecting, organizing, recording and describing information.
- (6A) - Preschool learners count objects, sorting, organizing, comparing groups of objects.

Instructional Strategies
- The environment includes a variety of manipulatives (parquetry blocks, unit cubes), collections (pebbles, plastic animals), dramatic play props variety of clothing, dishes, dolls, and art materials (fabric samples,tongue depressors) in different colors, shapes and sizes to encourage classifying and sorting experiences throughout the day.
- Encourage children to describe and talk about why they have sorted, classified and ordered objects in a certain way.
- Model vocabulary when talking about attributes and characteristics of objects in the environment.
- Include a variety of objects and materials, e.g.: shells, buttons, pegs, to provide each child many opportunities to count, sort, and compare.
The adult asks open-ended questions in order to focus children’s observations
