Math Essential Skills for Level 8

First Quarter:

Student will be able to:

  • Describe, and analyze patterns (geometric and numeric) and relationships using tables, graphs, verbal rules, and algebraic notation by problem solving. Math Standard 2.1a
  • Solve simple linear (multi-step equations). Math Standard 2.5a
  • Implement measures of central tendency, (mean, median, and mode) and measures of variability (range and quartiles). Math Standard 3.2a
  • Solve problems using coordinate geometry (maps, distance on a number line.) Math Standard 4.4a
  • Apply order of operations to evaluate simple expressions with integers. Math Standard 6.2a
  • Apply computational methods to solve commonly used fractions, decimals, percents and integers. Math Standard 6.5b

Second Quarter:

Student will be able to:

  • Read, write and order integers, rational and common irrational numbers. Math Standard 1.2
  • Explain, apply, and use the relationships among fractions, decimals and percents, including the concepts of ratio and proportion in problem-solving situations (unit rates, scale factors, similarity). Math Standard 1.4a
  • Describe patterns using variables, expressions, equations and inequalities. Math Standard 2.2a
  • Describe, analyze and reason informally about the properties (for example, parallelism, perpendicularity, congruent, and similarity) of two and three-dimensional figures. Math Standard 4.2a
  • Read and interpret scales on number line, graphs, and maps (given a map and a scale, determine the distance between two points.) Math Standard 5.6a
  • Convert from one set of units to another. Math Standard 6.1b

Third Quarter:

Student will be able to:

  • Estimate, make comparisons and interpret the use of scale factors, ratios, and proportions. (Find the height of a flagpole, determine the distance between two points.) Math Standard 5.2a
  • Read, construct and interpret displays of data using circle graphs, scatter plots, box and whisker plots, stem-and-leaf plots.) Math Standard 3.1a
  • Make predictions and use a model to determine theoretical probabilities and outcomes from an experiment to solve problems. Math Standard 3.6a
  • Explain how a change in one quantity results in a change in another (how a person’s height changes over time.) Math Standard 2.3a
  • Implement formulas and solve problems involving perimeter and area in two-dimensions, and involving surface area and volume in three-dimensions. Math Standard 4.5a
  • Develop models to explain how ratios, proportions and percentages can be used to solve real world problems. Math Standard 6.6a
  • Apply the concept of ratio, proportion and similarity. (similar triangles) Math Standard 4.7a

Fourth Quarter:

Student will be able to:

  • Describe how to change in an object’s linear dimensions affects its perimeter, area and volume: ex: how the area of a circle changes as the radius increases.) Math Standard 5.5a
  • Implement formulas and/or procedures to solve problems involving the perimeter, area and surface area of right prisms and cylinders. Math Standard 5.7a
  • Structure more than one-step unit multipliers. Math Standard 6.6c
  • Apply Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems. Math Standard 4.5b
