Standard6.3a - Level 1

Demonstrate understanding of basic addition sums to 20 and subtraction differences of 10.

Student will write correct answers to math facts.

KNOW Student will know answers to addition math facts with sums to 18.

Student will know answers to subtraction math facts with numbers less than 9.

Instructional Strategies

  1. Students will use manipulative games to practice math facts.
  2. Students will use cooperative learning to practice math facts in groups of two or more.
  3. Students will be given various materials to practice math facts.

Assessment Strategies

  • Essential Skills assessment given at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year.
  • Timed addition math fact assessment (100 possible problems, 5 minutes).
  • Subtraction math fact assessment (20 possible problems, not timed).

Strategies for Special Needs Students

  • "Larry's Laptop"-students practice math facts on their own laptop computer keyboard. Copy and laminate template of Larry's Laptop. Students use them to practice math facts and get acquainted with keyboard.
  • Fact Ball"-Student throws a ball to another student saying a math fact as he throws. The receiver restates that fact, then throws ball to another student stating a new fact.
