Standard 1.1e - Level 1

Demonstrate the value of nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars in terms of pennies ( for example, 25 pennies = 1 quarter).

Standard in Kid Friendly Language

Students will be able to look at some coins and name a penny, a nickel, a dime and a quarter. Students will also be able to count pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.

Standard Unwrapped

KNOW Students will know the value of a penny, nickel, dime and quarter.

ABLE TO DO Students will be able to identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Students will be able to count various coins in combination up to $.75.

Instructional Strategies

  1. Teacher will use overhead coins on projector requesting student response (on slates) to various coin amounts to provide practice and visual reinforcement and immediate feedback.
  2. Students will use manipulatives (real and plastic coins)and math journals to practice counting money.

Assessment Strategies

  • Essential skills assessment given at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year.
  • Unit 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 Everyday Mathematics assessment.
